A N95 million fibre optic project at the University of Ilorin, in Nigeria’s Kwara State is expected to go live on Tuesday.

Attendees of the launch of the project are said to include Kwara state governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, vice chancellor of the institution, Prof. Abdul Ganiyu Ambali, minister of communications technology, Omobola Johnson and representatives of the World Bank.

The World Bank-assisted fibre optic project, which is part of Nigeria’s ambitious effort to connect all 27 federal universities in the country to the internet by 2014, is designed to enhance internet and intranet connectivity at the university.

It involves the deployment of information and communications technology infrastructure at the university’s network operating centre (NOC) and the underground laying of cables across the main campus.

The exercise is also expected to connect 12 medical colleges and 28 off campus sites, a number of polytechnics and colleges of education.

Lagos-based ICT Company, Information Gateway Digital Systems Limited, is executing the project.

The project is in collaboration with Nigeria’s ministry of education, the National Universities Commission, Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) and the World Bank.
