The West African nation Liberia has joined other African countries in being among a few to rollout a 4G mobile broadband network.
Reports say that Cellcom GSM launched its newly built multi-million dollar network, giving people access to faster internet speeds.
“I’m proud to tell you that we are changing Liberia with technology,” said Cellcom’s chief executive officer, Avishai Marziano.
“We expect this new technology to affect education, the press, health, transportation, security and all aspects of Liberia,” he added.
Despite the rollout of the 4G networks in other African countries like Angola, Namibia and Tanzania industry experts believe that developing nations’ readiness to adopt these networks at the same level as the developed world is a disadvantage.
“There are still a lot of areas in Africa that don’t have 3G let alone 4G network services,” says Malik Melamu, managing director, Vodacom Lesotho.
“I think the progression is driven by economics so when I think for fourth generation network it just has to be selective because developing countries don’t have the necessary infrastructure,” he explained.
It is unclear as to the extent of Cellcom's 4G network coverage. Operators in Africa that have launched commercial LTE networks thus far have focused on cities such as Windhoek and Dar es Salam.
