PIVOT East reaches out to more African tech hubs

Tech hub m:Lab East Africa has partnered with regional incubation hubs to draw out more entrepreneurs in this year’s PIVOT East, an African mobile entrepreneurship pitching event.

The tech hubs include: Outbox (Uganda), Hive Colab (Uganda), Kinu (Tanzania), Buni (Tanzania), kLab (Rwanda), iceaddis (Ethiopia), iBiz Africa (Kenya) and C4DLab (Kenya).

According to m:Lab East Africa, the partnerships are planned to bring in greater variety in mobile pitches from the different countries.

Pivot East will be held in Nairobi, Kenya on 24th and 25th June where 25 finalist are expected to pitch to investors and industry players.

“They [incubation hubs] will play a key role in mobilising and supporting entrepreneurs and developers in the competition throughout the whole process,” the company said in a statement.

The partnership is already causing excitement in newly included countries such as Ethiopia.

Markos Lemma, from iceaddis hub Ethiopia, said, “This is a unique opportunity for our community and beyond to participate for the first time from Ethiopia. We hope that PIVOT East 2014 will help publicise Ethiopian developers to the East African community”.

The competition, which started in 2011, aims to amplify and consolidate Africa’s mobile developer and entrepreneurship ecosystem.

And a key objective for this year’s competition is “to facilitate discovery of the next wave of high potential mobile startups in the region.”
