Ghana: Vodafone bemoans latest NCA directive

Following the latest directive by Ghana's National Communication Authority (NCA) in which it ordered telecoms companies operating in the country to charge GHp4 per minute, one of the country's major networks Vodafone has described the action as one that is capable of killing businesses and negatively impacting telecoms subscribers.

According to the telecoms company, the NCA, through its latest directive, could make it difficult for the company to monetise its annual capital investment valued at GH¢80 million.

Gayheart Mensah, Vodafone's Director for External Affairs, said the NCA is over-regulating the industry.

"This is a small industry whereby every week and every month one directive or the other coming through from the NCA," he said. "If those directives from the NCA were targeted to improve operations of industry players and to satisfy consumers, we would have no problem, but most times, it restricts our will power to service the nation effectively."

He warned many players in the sector could decide to stop their operations in the country with the new directive.

"We are already overcrowded. If you compare the number of operators in Ghana and what exists in other markets, it gives concern for worrying, and it creates a situation where operating in the country becomes extremely difficult because of the fragmentations," he said.
