Kenya’s CCK officially rebrands to just ‘CA’

Kenya’s communications regulator has officially completed its rebranding effort.

Formerly the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK), the regulator on Tuesday announced that it has changed its name to the ‘Communications Authority of Kenya’.

And, confusingly, its new acronym is not CAK but rather just CA, according to the body’s official Twitter account.

Officials have also renamed the CCK Twitter account to ‘CA’.

Meanwhile, those handling the CA social media account have responded to followers’ questions confirming that the regulator is now officially referred to as just ‘CA’.

“Change has come to CCK,” the regulator’s Twitter account tweeted on Tuesday.

“The new identity being adopted follows the enactment of the Kenya Information and Communication (Amendment) Act, 2013,” said the regulator.

CA has explained on Twitter that when the CCK was originally established in 1999, its “initial mandate was regulation of the telecommunications and postal/courier sub-sectors.”

“Also in that initial mandate was the regulation .. and the management of the country’s radiofrequency spectrum,” tweeted the CA.

But as the CA, the regulatory body is expected to officially have wider reach owing to rapid developments in the information and communications technology (ICT) space in Kenya.

Kenya, for example, has the world’s biggest mobile money market with over 25 million users.

Mandates that are additionally and now officially part of the CA include broadcasting, e-commerce and multimedia .

However, this announcement by the CA is rather an official acknowledgement of these segments of the ICT sector, especially as the CCK has already been reporting on the likes of broadcast audience data in its previous quarterly reports.

Nevertheless, the CA has identified its renewed mission statement.

“The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) is now responsible for facilitating the development of the information & communications sectors,” tweeted the authority.

“CA's mission is to transform lives through progressive regulation of the Information and Communications Technology Sector,” said the regulatory body.
