Nigerian govt to give ‘10 million’ phones to farmers

About 10 million mobile devices are planned to be distributed to Nigerian farmers in a bid to boost agricultural production in the country, says the country’s federal government.

Ibukun Odusote, the permanent secretary in the federal ministry of agriculture and rural development, has been quoted in Nigeria’s Business Day as having said the beneficiaries of the devices are planned to receive information on farming seasons, prices of products, fertiliser delivery dates and scarcity periods.

Odusote added that the country’s Ministry of Information Technology and relevant stakeholders had been contacted to help distribute the phones.

"The Federal Government will be putting some support into this, they will go into the hinterlands and expand their network so that we can have access," Odusote said.

Odusote, though, has not specified the exact amount to be expended on the project.
