Malawi introduces first fleet of electric vehicles
A Malawian company will present the country's first Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Lilongwe today.
Sky Energy, an early adopter of clean energy solutions in Malawi, is being led by a 32-year-old sustainable energy entrepreneur, Schizzo Thomson. He is Malawi's first electric vehicle dealer.
The car selection includes well-known EV brands like as Citroen, Wuling Air, and BYD,
"EVs constitute an emerging technology in the global push for clean and affordable mobility as they are known to cut carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels that worsen climate change," Sky Energy stated in a statement.
"As such, it is no surprise that this groundbreaking shift in Malawi's transport and automobile sector is being pioneered by Sky Energy, a youth-led enterprise with its eyes firmly set on sustainable technologies that work and solutions for the future."
It added: "This strategic expansion aligns seamlessly with our mission to drive positive environmental impact and promote a greener tomorrow for the people of Malawi."
The EVs include a fast charger that can provide 350 km of range on a single charge.
This strategic network of fast chargers, according to the business, will not only enable seamless long-distance travel, but will also contribute to the mainstream adoption of electric vehicles, making sustainable transportation a practical and accessible option for everyone.
The company said: "Furthermore, recognising the importance of a comprehensive charging infrastructure, we are proud to announce that fast chargers will be strategically installed across all major cities in Malawi.
"Demand exists, with Total already jumping into the fray to partner with Sky Energy in installing chargers in fuel stations and strategic locations. Sky Energy has installed solar power in all Total and Puma fueling stations over the last three years."
