Nigeria has announced ambitions to manufacture and assemble electric cars (EVs) through a new relationship with Morocco.

This initiative was facilitated by the National Automotive Design and Development Council and announced by the organisation's director-general, Joseph Osanipin, at a recent Nigeria-Morocco business forum.

During the forum, the delegation paid visits to the National Center for Homologation, Morocco's automobile regulatory agency, as well as local businesses.

According to Joseph, the cooperation intends to improve local manufacturing skills and technological competence while decreasing dependency on imported vehicles.

He highlighted the possibilities for economic growth and environmental sustainability, saying: “Manufacturing electric vehicles in Nigeria will aid our quest for energy transition in mobility, create jobs, and promote local component production.”

During the forum, Joseph spoke to the Moroccan delegation about investment potential in Nigeria's automotive sector, emphasising the importance of investing in the country's EV sector.

Joseph further remarked that the engagement with Moroccan enterprises represents the start of an important exchange of knowledge and skills for Nigeria's automotive sector development.

“It is an eye-opener and it marks the beginning of collaboration that will enable us to learn about regulations, inspections, and testing processes,” he stated.
