Police have been deployed to Ghanaian city Tamale amid tensions from residents who have threatened to destroy masts belonging to mobile network operators.

Angry residents have described the structures as a ‘nuisance’, with the biggest concern among them being reportedly the noise emitted by generators powering the masts.

Some residents have even threatened to burn down the masts belonging to Vodafone, Tigo, Airtel, and Glo.

A resident, Abdul Karim lamented, "Instead of the telco operators going through the proper procedures at the Volta River Authority, they have resorted to using generators which makes a lot of noise thereby affecting our sleep at night.”

Abu Suley, another resident, said the structures were weighing the power supply down.

"Anytime there is power, the masts alone consume the total voltage supply of the entire area causing appliances like fridges and air conditioners to break down," he said.

Ghana’s Northern Regional Police Command has subsequently deployed officers to the area amid rising tensions.
