United Arab Emirates (UAE) airline Emirates has implemented a ‘first-of-its-kind’ electronic cargo system on flights between Dubai and the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
The electronic-air waybill (e-AWB) system has been implemented by the freight division of the UAE based airline: Emirates SkyCargo.
According to Emirates SkyCargo -- which operates dedicated freighter aircrafts between Dubai and Nairobi three times a week as well as 14 weekly flights out of Nairobi -- it is the first airline to carry cargo under the multilateral agreement.
The e-AWB process is planned to enable Emirates SkyCargo to manage processes electronically therefore enabling a paperless cargo system.
A company statement further reads that the e-AWB can be used in all cases where the country of origin and the country of destination have ratified the Montreal Convention or Montreal Protocol.
Emirates says benefits of e-AWBs include that information is more accurate, there is a greater degree of confidentiality, and that there is increased efficiency of the supply chain.
Emirates SkyCargo has also involved industry stakeholders in the e-AWB adoption process, such as customs, handling agents, freight forwarders and relevant government entities.
“Eliminating paper AWBs from our hub demonstrates our commitment to bringing enhanced operational efficiency to the supply chain,” said Khalid Al Hinai Emirates Cargo manager for East Africa.
“The benefits for the entire industry are clear, simplifying business and reducing costs, and as more and more parties come on board, the benefits will become greater,” Al Hinai added.
