Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration has authorised the commencement of a national integrated data and information infrastructure system to curb threats to national security.

Known as the Basic Registry and Information System in Nigeria (BRISIN), the system, which needs to be built, is intended to register and capture the biometrics of every Nigerian from ward to state level.

Apart from curbing national security threats, government is hoping the system could also provide a solid foundation for planning technological and socio-economic development growth for the country.

The BRISIN project is contracted to Dermo Impex Nig Limited.

Managing director of Dermo Impext, Anthony Uwa, has confirmed the deal is to go ahead.

"The BRISIN platform will facilitate and guarantee regular and continuous collection of all data and information and integrates same for assessment and management of the population, as well as the economy and utilised by all institutions in the country,” he added.

The move to launch the project comes as an insurgency from Islamist sect Boko Haram has killed thousands of Nigerians in the past three years.
