Quality of service woes

Nigeria’s telecoms regulator has threatened more action against telecommunications companies, after it dished out heavy fines to the likes of MTN and Etisalat.

Nigerian Communications Commission vice chairman, Dr. Eugene Juwah, said the telecoms regulator would not accept a situation where customers had poor quality communication networks.

Four operators in that country have been fined for poor quality service, such as dropped calls.

MTN and Etisalat have been fined $2.3 Million each while Airtel is expected to pay the sum of $1.7 million. Globacom attracted a penalty of $1.1 million.

And in a briefing to the communications committee of the lower house of the Nigerian parliament about last week's heavy penalties on these GSM providers, Juwah said more penalties could follow if no solution insight is found.

All the operators are to pay the penalties on or before May 21, 2012 or be liable to payment of additional $15,888 per day for as long as the contravention persists.

MTN has blamed its quality of service problems on challenges that exist in Nigeria such as the unavailability of regular power supply, the insecurity of property, vandalism, and the menace of multiple taxation and over-regulation.

Similarly, Etisalat said lack of reliable electricity and sabotage for poor service after the regulator fined telecom firms for failing to meet quality targets.

“This year alone we are investing more than half a billion dollars in expansion of our network capabilities and capacity,” Chief Executive Steven Evans said.
