A swift investigation has been launched into a cyber security breach affecting approximately 5,700 customers of MTN Ghana.
The Ghana Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations revealed that the breach, reported on April 28, has prompted immediate collaboration with key regulatory bodies to assess the extent of the incident and implement mitigation measures.
In a statement, MTN Group confirmed the security incident but assured the public that its platforms remain fully operational.
It said: “The confidentiality, integrity and availability of our systems remain central to how we operate and serve our customers. While we have not yet confirmed the full extent of the breach, early indications suggest about 5,700 customers in Ghana may have been impacted.”
The telco reassured its customers that platforms remain fully operational. As a listed entity, MTN Ghana is mandated to report the threat to local law enforcement agencies.
In the statement, the telecom giant also confirmed that it is working with cyber security experts to conduct a forensic investigation and pledged to contact affected customers directly.
“The investigation is still ongoing, and we are devoting the requisite resources to resolve this matter. As a reminder, customers are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow regular security measures,” it stated.
MTN has urged its customers to take proactive steps to safeguard their information, including placing fraud alerts with credit bureaus, updating apps and devices, using strong passwords, avoiding suspicious links, and enabling multifactor authentication where available.
The Ghana Ministry of Communications emphasised its commitment to protecting citizens’ data, stressing that it will continue to engage all stakeholders to ensure accountability and strengthen digital infrastructure.
“This incident underscores the need for heightened vigilance and robust cybersecurity frameworks, especially in critical sectors like telecommunications,” a Ministry spokesperson said.
