30,000 African post offices to get internet connections

The Pan African Postal Union (PAPU) plans to connect all of its 30,000 African offices to the internet by year-end.

This was revealed during a workshop conference in Kenyan town Arusha dubbed ‘Electrification and Connectivity Project for Post Offices in Africa’.

PAPU was set up by the African Union 34 years ago and stationed in Tanzania.

Its aim is to spur on the growth of postal services in Africa.

"Right now we're in final stages of preparing documents of agreements with development partners and by June, this year we'll be meeting with partners for agreements," PAPU's secretary general Younouss Djibrine said.

“We are very optimistic that this time round we'll start on time as we've secured donors," he added, pointing out that the project has never taken off owing to a lack of funds.

Djibrine added that by 2016, 80% of Africa’s post offices are forecast be linked to the internet.
