Ghana's mobile data subs top 13.9 million

West African nation Ghana's mobile data penetration rate reached 52.7% as of the end of June 2014, according to statistics from the country’s telecom regulator.

Ghana's total mobile data subscriptions have now reached 13.9 million, says the country’s National Communications Authority.

The regulator noted that subscriptions increased by 3.97% in June.

In January 2014, Ghana had recorded 12.4 million mobile data subscribers, which was a 47.3% penetration in the country.

The likes of BuddeComm research has noted that 3G mobile broadband services in Ghana would represent the majority of internet connections in the country.

The National Communications Authority says South African telecoms group MTN increased its mobile data subscriptions by 2.5% for the period ended in June bringing its market share of this space to 50.54%.

According to MTN interim financial results for the six months ended 30 June 2014, it has 7.1 million data users in Ghana.

Meanwhile, the National Communications Authority has said Airtel had just over 2 million mobile data subscribers in Ghana.

Airtel’s data subscriptions increased slightly by 0.34% at the end of June, according to the National Communications Authority.

Including MTN and Airtel, Ghana has a total of six mobile operators.
