
Nigeria’s Glo Mobile (Globacom) has signed a $750 million network upgrade contract with Chinese telecoms equipment firm Huawei Technologies.
The upgrades are reportedly expected to include new switches, an increase in the number of mobile switching centres and the construction of 4,000km of additional fibre optic cables.
Huawei officials said the network expansion plans are the biggest that they have been involved with in Nigeria.
“This is a huge expansion project,” said David Fan, Huawei’s vice president, West Africa.
“We promise Globacom and its subscribers that we will meet their expectation and deliver a network they will all be proud of,” said David Fan, Huawei’s vice president, West Africa.
Glo mobile Nigeria’s second biggest mobile operator after MTN. According to ABI Research, Glo Mobile has over 22 million mobile subscriber lines.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says that Nigeria has over 100 million mobile subscribers.
