Gambian telcos adopt internet exchange report
Various telecoms companies in West African nation Gambia have approved a report that will see the country host an internet exchange point (IXP).
Gamtel, PURA, Gamcel, Comium, QCELL, Unique Solutions, Netpage and ECOWAN, have authorised the draft study report of the West Africa Regional Communication Infrastructure Programme (WARCIP), which proposes that the country have an IXP.
The report states that the internet exchange point will enhance the country’s connectivity by avoiding sending traffic through expensive international points and also offer the region quality internet access.
The report also includes recommendations regarding the technical and management process aspects of the point, which have been agreed on by the stakeholders.
Lamin Camara, deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Information, Communication and Infrastructure (MOICI) said, “We as a ministry are just here to facilitate, the IXP is here for you and you are the ones who are going to make use of its services.”
