Nigeria banks on Digital Access Fund to reinforce migration strategy

Nigeria's government plans to establish a Digital Access Fund in support of the country's effort to meet the June 2017 digital migration deadline. The Fund will source revenue from annual TV license payments.

Announcing this development in Abuja during the official switchover of the city, Is'haq Modibbo Kawu, Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), said the fund would be used to support content developers in the industry.

Commenting on the next phase of the digital migration, Kawu said the NBC is working with state governors and in addition to three states that have already been switched over, the Commission plans to switch over six additional states in each of the six geopolitical zones.

"It had been projected that over one million direct and indirect jobs would be created after Nigeria completed its DSO in June, 2017. With the official switch on digital broadcasting in Abuja, analogue TV owners who have not purchased the Set-Top-Boxes will still be able to watch TV till June 2017 when the analogue broadcasting would be switched off in the country," he said.
