59% of Nigerians ‘unaware’ of mobile money - survey

About 60% of Nigerians are ‘unaware’ of mobile money,  two years after the introduction of the service in the country, says a snap poll.

Nigerian opinion poll and research organisation NOI Polls has conducted the mobile money services snap poll.

NOI says the opinion poll was conducted on August 5-7 2013 and that it involved telephonic interviews of a random nationwide sample consisting of 1,004 Nigerians aged 18 years and above, representing six geopolitical zones in the country.

And according to results, NOI says 59% of Nigeria's population of more than 160 million people are ‘unaware’ of mobile money.

Furthermore, according to the results of poll, only 13% of those that are aware of Mobile Money currently use it.

NOI says the poll has been conducted to explore the current level of awareness of the services among Nigerians, and to help determine its potential for the future.

NOI also says its analysis is based on geo-political zones, which has illustrated that awareness levels of mobile money in Nigeria vary in different regions.

For instance, the North-Central recorded 43% awareness while the North-East recorded 70%.

NOI says poll results further say that an overwhelming majority (93%) of those that use the service, operate their mobile money account in connection with their bank accounts.

However, in the report, 71% of non-users say they could consider using mobile money services in the future.

In August 2011, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) licensed 16 banks and other financial institutions to establish mobile money services throughout the country.
