Telkom plans to develop a borderless fibre network ecosystem for the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Serame Taukobong, Telkom Group CEO, announced the intentions yesterday at the beginning of the 45th Southern African Telecommunications Association (SATA) annual conference.

He also revealed that Openserve, a key business arm of the South African Telkom Group, will take over the chairmanship of SATA for the 2025-2026 term.

In light of this context, he disclosed significant projects that the company will spearhead during its tenure as chairman.

“This is not just a milestone for Telkom; it is a responsibility we embrace with great pride and commitment to advancing Africa’s digital future,” Taukobong said.

Top on the agenda is the “borderless fibre” project, which he said will link up all the SADC countries.

He expanded on additional plans: “Our second project, is establishing a Tier 4-ranked regional data centre hub complimented by our Openserve fibre network which will further advance our digital transformation efforts.

“The third initiative involves the implementation of the One SADC Roaming Flat Tariff, aimed at significantly enhancing cross-border communication and fostering deeper regional integration among the 14 SADC member states.”

Taukobong continued: “On behalf of the Telkom Group, I make a firm commitment that during our tenure, we will work tirelessly to fulfil SATA’s mission.”

As the Telkom Group prepares to assume the incoming chairmanship, Taukobong said, the telco’s “commitment is clear: we will work to strengthen regional integration, foster knowledge exchange, and contribute meaningfully to the socio economic advancement of Southern Africa through the transformative power of connectivity.”
