Zambia made significant gains in the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2023, scoring 92.6 percent, up from 68.8 percent in 2020.

The GCI developed by the International Telecommunication Union), assesses countries' commitment to cyber security development across five important pillars: legal measures, technical measures, organisational measures, capacity building, and cooperation.

“This milestone reflects Zambia’s commitment to enhancing its cyber security landscape and safeguarding its digital infrastructure,” Felix Mutati, science and technology minister, said.

Mutati feels Zambia's rise in the GCI reflects the government's strong commitment to defending the country's digital economy, critical infrastructure, and Zambian citizens from cyber-attacks.

He noted that Zambia's improved GCI performance demonstrated the country's commitment to building a safe digital ecosystem that supported economic growth and innovation.

“This achievement underscores the government’s vision of a safer, more connected Zambia,” he assured.

The government asserts it has enacted comprehensive data protection and cyber security legislation.

Zambia has established a National Cybersecurity Strategy and created organisations such as the Computer Incident Response Team.

It has strengthened international ties and participates in multilateral agreements to improve information sharing and cross-border cyber security operations.

Zambia is also investing in training and education to increase cyber security awareness among the general public, youth, and professionals.
