A mobile money service allowing cross-border transfers in Mali, Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire has been launched by French telecoms firm Orange.

The service, dubbed ‘Orange Money International Transfer’, is targeting the three countries among which 200 million euros are transferred every year across borders, according to Orange.

With Orange’s mobile money service, a customer in Cote d’Ivoire can send money directly to friends and family or to suppliers in Mali or Senegal with their ‘Orange Money account.’

Senders need to dial a special number from their mobile phones, then enter the Orange telephone numbers of the recipients and the amounts to be sent. The money is immediately available in the recipients’ accounts and can be withdrawn from any Orange Money distributor.

“We are proud to be the first operator to offer customers the ability to make international money transfers between mobile phones in this area of Western Africa,” says Thierry Millet, director of the strategic NFC and payment programmes at Orange.

Orange also plans to expand the service to the other countries in which it operates.
