Tanzania banks on agri-tech to lift smallholder farmers
Tanzania has launched an ambitious digital agricultural transformation initiative to modernise the country's farming sector.
The East African country has since established a joint programme steering committee on digital agriculture, bringing together government agencies, United Nations authorities, and development partners in a three-year project to transform farming methods across the country.
The bilateral program addresses important difficulties for smallholder farmers by providing integrated digital solutions that include weather forecasting, market data access, pest management strategies, mobile advisory services, and digital payment systems.
Also, the program builds a comprehensive ecosystem to address the persistent challenges of low productivity, limited market access, and inefficient systems by providing digital platforms that deliver real-time market prices, weather forecasts, and agronomic advice, as well as implementing fintech solutions for improved credit access.
Furthermore, the initiative’s multidimensional approach targets fundamental agricultural challenges through complementary projects including developing rural network infrastructure, strengthening data governance, fostering agri-tech entrepreneurs, and increasing financial inclusion, particularly among women and youth farmers.
United Nations Resident Coordinator Susan Namondo emphasised the initiative's disruptive potential, adding that "by leveraging technology, data, and finance, we can unlock new opportunities for smallholder farmers and drive sustainable food systems."."
