Telkom SA announces largest fibre open access suburb

The fibre roll out for what South African telecommunications firm Telkom says is the largest fibre open access suburb to date, has already started.

Telkom has announced that more than 12 000 homes in Bryanston will have access to fibre technology by March 2016.

Alphonzo Samuels, Telkom's managing director confirmed the process is underway. "We are rolling out fibre to all of Bryanston as part of our aggressive push to provide one million homes with fibre access by 2018," he said.

Samuels added that Bryanston would be a model for the country when it comes to connecting entire suburbs to fibre broadband.

Telkom says it is now utilising its vast fibre infrastructure of more than 149,000 kilometres to bring the technology to this suburb.

Fibre to the home on Telkom's network currently allows for download speeds of up to 100Mbps, allowing users to download a standard definition 4.7GB video in under seven minutes.

This development follows Telkom's announcement last week that its open access fibre broadband network would include more than 25 additional areas, suburbs and communities by the end of September 2015.

According to Telkom fibre would be available in multiple additional suburbs of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Kimberley and Port Elizabeth.
