ITU Secretary-General visits Rwanda

Zhao Houlin, Secretary-General of the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), is said to be on a three-day visit to Rwanda.

The New Times reports that Houlin's schedule includes a tour of the Telecom House in Kacyiru covering the 4G Innovation Centre and kLab hub.

This is reported to be Houlin's first visit to Africa, according to Rwanda's Minister for Youth and ICT, Jean Philbert Nsengimana.

He is quoted as saying that the visit reinforces ties between the country and the ITU.

The country was re-elected as a member state of the Council of ITU for 2014 – 2018.

The Council is focused on policy-making and ensuring that the ITU keeps abreast of changes within telecommunications. It is also oversees administrative management of the Body.

According to Buddecom the Rwandan telecom sector has demonstrated growth in recent years, supported by a vibrant economy and a GDP that has sustained growth of between 7% and 8% annually since 2008.
