MTN South Sudan continues to build bridges beyond technology, expanding its responsibility beyond telecommunications.
The telco recently stepped in to distribute food in Juba through its outreach initiative, which reached over 1,000 vulnerable individuals, including more than 500 inmates cared for by the South Sudan National Prison Service (SSNPS) and over 500 widows of fallen soldiers supported by the South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF) Social Welfare Directorate.
Moses Mayor, MTN's chief of legal, regulatory, and corporate affairs, stated that the mobile service company, which has the largest customer base in South Sudan with over 2.5 million users, distributed various food items timed to coincide with Ramadan and Easter.
“This initiative reaffirms MTN South Sudan’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities. Sharing the little assorted food items signifies HOPE to the inmates that they are not forgotten,” he said.
Gen. Joseph Moses, head of SSNPS, expressed his appreciation for MTN’s “genuine commitment” during what he described as difficult economic times. Presently, South Sudan is grappling with a multifaceted crisis marked by escalating political tensions, renewed violence, and a deepening humanitarian emergency
Brigadier General Martha Awut, Head of SSPDF Social Welfare, also welcomed the support for the widows, calling the partnership vital in uplifting families of fallen heroes.
Mayor underlined that the initiative highlights MTN’s dedication to Corporate Social Responsibility and sustainable development.
“It also reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to use its resources and influence to address social challenges, particularly food insecurity,” he said.
MTN South Sudan credited the successful execution of the initiative to the close collaboration with SSNPS and the SSPDF Social Welfare Directorate.
“MTN South Sudan remains dedicated to leveraging our presence to foster hope, support sustainable development, and connect everyone to the benefits of a modern, connected life,” said Mayor.
