DStv drops prices in Kenya

Pay television service provider DStv has announced a promotional reduction in price for its decoders by 48% in what seems as a response to Safaricom’s entry into the digital TV space last week.

In a bid to capture the market DStv announced that it will be selling its decoders at Kshs2,499 from a price of Kshs4,800. For a decoder and full installation - new subscribers will be getting the package at Kshs5,700.

Kenya's pay TV space is growing competitive at every turn as the digital migration deadline nears.

Kenya's leading mobile operator Safaricom launched its TV offering, which is coupled with high speed internet for homes signaling a shift in tactic to capture new subscribers.

Philip Wahome, communications manager at MultiChoice said that the competition being witnessed in the sector is welcomed.

“We were the first to be in this space for the last 20 years and the competition helps customer awareness in the pay TV market,” Wahome told journalists.

More price wars are expected to dominate the market as every company aims to bite a sizeable chunk of the market.
