Ethio Telecom has partnered with Siinqee Bank to provide two million smartphones annually on long-term payment plans to ensure digital inclusion across Ethiopia.

The partnership is part of the telco’s broader plan to bridge the digital divide nationwide through increasing smartphone penetration.

Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamiru emphasised that cellphones are often the first and only means of communication in many parts of Africa, especially rural areas.

“Our company, in partnership with Siinqee Bank, will provide smartphones with an annual budget of $70 million through long-term payment plans specifically for low-income individuals and community members residing in rural areas who have long been excluded from digital services due to affordability barriers,” said Tamiru.

She stressed that through this initiative, citizens will be able to acquire smartphones at affordable prices via manageable, long-term installment plans, helping expand access to the digital economy.

This collaboration reinforces the company’s commitment to building an inclusive digital ecosystem that leaves no one behind.

“This includes empowering the financial sector with technology, fostering its ecosystem, and enhancing accessibility and inclusivity,” she said.

Leveraging the success of telebirr, Ethio Telecom’s digital payment platform, which boasts over 52.5 million subscribers, Ethio Telecom is transforming business operations and extending financial services to previously underserved communities.

In a major new development, the telecommunications company and Siinqee Bank have also officially partnered to launch a range of digital financial services via telebirr.

This partnership enables citizens to conveniently access savings services, microcredit, and salary loans digitally, alongside device financing options.

Customers can now open interest-free and interest-bearing mobile savings accounts, secure microloans and apply for salary loans equivalent to up to five months' income.

“We are committed to introducing innovative digital financial services that improve the community’s lifestyle, drive inclusive economic growth, and accelerate Ethiopia’s journey towards digital and financial inclusion,” said Tamiru.
