Malawi to host AI awareness day
The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and STEAM (CAIST), in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology at Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), will hold an AI awareness day this month titled "Embracing AI for Unlocking Professional Potential."
MUST recently launched the Centre for Artificial Intelligence, also known as CAIST, in response to the country's growing technological needs.
The event is slated for May 17th, 2024, at Thyolo's campus library auditorium.
Dr. Michael Zimba, executive dean of the Malawi Institute of Technology and an AI advocate, stated that the goal of AI Awareness Day is to increase students' and staff's comprehension and knowledge of AI for them to understand the value of AI in education.
"By increasing awareness of AI, students and staff can better comprehend the potential impact of AI on their current work and future careers and job prospects," he said.
According to Zimba, staff and students will showcase AI projects such as: AI Accident Prevention System and AI Gate Entry Tracking system, and there will also be question and answer session.
He continued to say this theme aligns well with the goals of AI Awareness Day because it “emphasizes the importance of understanding AI and its applications to unlock new economic growth and development opportunities.”
He said, among the topics to be covered will be: How can we safely apply AI in our everyday life and society?
Zimba said at the end they want staff, students and the general public to be aware that AI is here and the need to embrace it in their work and communities.
