The Lagos State Government has announced a partnership with Huawei Technologies, a global technology infrastructure provider, to set up four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) locations across the city.
This effort intends to significantly enhance traffic management and road safety.
During a press briefing on Thursday, Lagos State commissioner for transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi explained how the new system will work alongside the state's existing automatic number plate recognition cameras and other traffic management solution devices.
According to him, “The newly established ITS sites are divided into two main categories: checkpoint sites for speed monitoring and e-police sites for traffic violation detection. These systems are designed to enforce traffic regulations, manage vehicle speeds, and ensure safer driving conditions throughout Lagos.”
He explained that the four ITS locations were intentionally chosen to meet particular traffic concerns. Checkpoints have been set up in Alapere, where the speed restriction is 80 km/h, and Nitel on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, where the speed limit is 60 km/h.
E-police stations have already been set up at Allen Avenue Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road, complete with high-definition cameras to monitor traffic offences.
Osiyemi emphasised that the relationship with Huawei would considerably improve Lagos' traffic monitoring and management skills, hence boosting overall road safety.
He emphasised the Lagos State Government's commitment to modernising its transport infrastructure in order to address the increasing problem of traffic congestion, as well as to advance the Lagos Smart City Agenda.
