Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) has extended network coverage from 2G to 4G LTE in 45 settlements in the country's Okavango and Northwest regions.

The development is part of the company's efforts to improve network performance and increase mobile data use.

The network renovation and expansion initiative, according to BTC Managing Director Anthony Masunga, will inspire creative and economical services in schools, communities, and health institutions.

"BTC is constantly investing in network expansion to provide users and customers with the broadest coverage, fastest speeds, and best-performing network," Masunga added.

Pontsho Pusotsile, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Communication, Knowledge, and Technology, agreed with Masunga that communications infrastructure and connection are the means to achieving prosperity, as predicted in the country’s Vision 2036.

Huawei Technologies Botswana expressed similar thoughts, stressing the need of stable connectivity in rural areas.

"Access to communication and technology is no longer a luxury, but a necessity," said David Zhang, Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Botswana, adding that rural and remote areas should not be left behind in development.

"We must not forget our remote areas, where access to essential services and opportunities is difficult," he stated.
