Opera launches OPay in Kenya
Following a vigorous testing process, Opera Software has launched a web-enabled payment system OPay that has been integrated into the Opera Mini browser.
Users of the browser will be able to access mobile money payment and credit card services including mobile credit purchases and bill payments.
"This mobile payment technology integrated into the Opera Mini browser will help Kenya continue the highest rate of mobile payment technology adoption in the world. More than 80 percent of the country's population with access to a cell phone use it to pay for goods and services," said Nuno Sitima, Executive Vice President of Payments and Fintech, Opera Software AS.
"Our ultimate goal is to fuel the growth of African businesses through a simple, affordable solution that can encompass many payment methods in one easy-to-use app."
Kenya is one of the leading countries in Sub Saharan Africa where the growth on mobile internet (accounting for 99% of internet connections), coupled with mobile money, has strengthened its appeal as a growth market for web payment service and the mobile payment ecosystem.
"Growing businesses in the digital age, particularly in Africa's critically important informal sector (which accounts for as much as 60% of the total GDP in some African states), require easy and secure payment functions that help people get around the continent's many gaping holes in service delivery and infrastructure," the company said in a statement.
For limited time, new users will be rewarded with cash backs and credit rewards for using the service.
OPay is part of Opera's US$100 million commitment to grow the African digital economy.
