Musicians launch Tidal

The artist's version of a subscription-based music streaming service, Tidal, was officially launched on Monday in New York.

Tidal, which is available in more than 30 countries including South Africa, hopes to rival popular streaming music service, Spotify.

The service was formed by international musicians including Jay Z, Beyonce, Kanye West, Madonna and Rihanna.

According to a statement Tidal is the ideal music service for those who care about quality of music.

Users will have access to a library of 25 million-plus tracks, 75,000 music videos, and curated editorial articles, features and interviews written by experts, reads the statement.

Users also have two options of the ad-free service for $9.99 or a premium tier service for $19.99 a month.

Tidal is available via a web browser and via desktop players, and users can download an app from the iTunes App Store or the Google Play Store.

"TIDAL is a single destination for artists and fans to share ideas, exclusive content, songs, videos, studio sessions, rough tracks, personal conversations and more," reads the statement.

"New artist pages feature a separate video tab, a social tab integrating Twitter feeds from a range of prominent artists, and a merchandise tab for selected artists, where users can purchase merchandise through the official artist store. Tracks, albums and EPs have been merged into a new discography tab."

ITWeb Africa previously reported that with the growth of the internet in Africa, radio stations are adopting 'crowdsourced' models in which the continent's listeners choose what they want to hear and when.
