Microsoft launches affordable LTE smartphones
Software giant Microsoft unveiled its latest Lumia long term evolution (LTE) enabled devices in Johannesburg, South Africa on Tuesday 9 June 2015.
The Lumia 640 and Lumia 640XL are the latest devices to be added to Microsoft's smartphone range, they also join the LTE / 4G devices Lumia portfolio.
The LTE enabled devices are available for purchase in single or dual SIM range.
According to head of product, Microsoft Mobile Devices for sub-Saharan Africa, Patrick Henchie the Lumia 640 device is available on monthly contract prices starting from R219 for the dual SIM version, and R199 for the single SIM version, while it will cost R269 for Lumia 640 XL.
Speaking at the launch event Henchie said the Lumia 640 and 640XL offer more personal computing and increased productivity, and integrated Microsoft Office experiences, which come with a one-year subscription to Office 365 Personal.
Other features include 1TB of OneDrive storage and both devices will be upgradeable to Windows 10 when it becomes available later this year.
Both devices allow users to view photos and watch videos on HD display. The Lumia 640XL has a 13 megapixel camera and an 8 megapixel camera on the Lumia 640, also with an LED flash.
Shaun Durandt, Microsoft Mobile Devices' South African sales lead added that the launch of the devices is part of their drive to provide affordable devices to customers.
Microsoft also launched the Lumia 430, which it describes as its first smartphone device under the R1000 mark.
The Microsoft Lumia 430 is only available as a dual SIM phone and will retail for R999. The device is immediately available in black and orange colours.
The Lumia 430 is built with Windows Phone 8.1 software, a dual-core CPU running at 1.2GHz and it comes preloaded with Microsoft Office, Skype and OneDrive.
Commenting on the launch of a dual SIM phone in the South African market - Durandt told the audience that although dual SIM devices are mainly pervasive in East Africa, they still see possibility of growth for these devices in the country.
Microsoft said it is also targeting the lower end of the market that is starting to prioritise key apps like WhatsApp.
