The Kenyan ministry of education this week launched the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS), an online portal developed for the collection of real-time and accurate data on learning institutions and learners.

The system will see examination candidates assigned a specific number that will be used throughout their academic career, according to the ministry.

Techweez reported that the ministry had been testing the system out for the better part of last year.

School heads have been given until 20 February to submit institutional and learner information, The Star reports.

The ministry says a specific identifier index will enable it to trace the progress of students and keep track of education resources being supplied.

During an interview with K24 TV, Principal Secretary of the State Department of Education in Kenya Dr. Richard Belio Kipsang said, "The system will also assist us at school level when we are doing a performance analysis and also with all issues that pertain to the child, e.g. attendance to school."

He added that the data will be processed for use in times of policy decisions, and resource allocation.

According to Techweez, the system's success is as a result of a US$88.4 million grant from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE).
