Rwanda's minister of Youth and ICT, Jean Philbert Nsengimana, has urged young people but especially girls in that country to embrace technology and maximise the opportunities it offers.

Speaking at the ICT Literacy and Awareness campaign, Nsengimana said that the number of women in Rwanda’s ICT sector is still low, which has pushed the ministry to focus more on empowering girls to embrace technology.

The campaign is planned to drive awareness and usage of ICT services, content and applications, increase ICT literacy, educate and train Rwandans and business people on the potential of ICT to drive competitiveness, efficiency as well as civic participation.

“Knowledge is power and wealth,” he said.

The minister reiterated that opportunities of ICT must reach all Rwandans, regardless of the economy, level of education and location.

He added: “Our economy will no longer base on raw power but will be knowledge based.”

Nsengimana also pointed out that ICT offers many chances that were not there in past.

"ICT gives opportunities that were not in past and gives new jobs that were not created. We want to make awareness of these opportunities,” he explained.
