Residents of Mombasa in Kenya can expect to gain access to more fibre services as a result of expansion plans by pay television services provider Zuku TV.

The Kenyan headquartered firm has announced plans to expand its residential fibre services to East Africa’s second largest city, according to KTN Kenya.

KTN has reported that Zuku TV plans to expand its services to cities and counties outside of Nairobi.

Zuku TV is one of Kenya’s satellite television service providers and it offers TV, telephone and broadband services -- or triple play services -- to residents in that country.

Richard Bell, vice chairman of the Wananchi Group, which owns Zuku TV, told KTN Kenya that his company has already started with construction in Mombasa.

He said his company plans to connect around 100,000 homes in Mombasa in the next 12 months.

“Once we’ve built Nairobi and Mombasa we’ll start looking at other towns and we’re also hopeful that as the universal service fund comes on stream we’ll be able to apply to the universal service fund to build residential fibre in some of the other parts of the counties, cities around the county,” said Bell.

KTN Kenya also reported that Zuku TV is looking for funding of between 4.3 billion and 8.7 billion shillings to expand its cable business in Tanzania and Uganda before the end of the year.
