Nigeria’s second largest mobile operator Globacom, which signed a $750 million contract with China’s Huawei last week, has inked another mult-million dollar deal to help upgrade its network.

Globacom, also referred to as Glo Mobile, yesterday signed a $500 million network modernisation and expansion contract with telecom vendor ZTE Corporation. ZTE, like Huawei, is also headquartered in China.

Last week, Glo Mobile and Huawei announced they had signed a $750 million deal to also upgrade the operator’s network.

Mohamed Jameel, group chief operating officer of Globacom, said the ZTE contract is part of the firm’s nationwide network expansion and modernisation project.

According to ABI Research, Glo Mobile has over 22 million mobile subscriber lines in Nigeria, which makes it the second largest mobile operator in that country after MTN.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says that Nigeria has over 100 million mobile subscribers.

“We are here today to sign a memorandum of understanding with ZTE as part of our expansion plan to modernise every aspect of our network and this is expected to result in much improved services,” Jameel said.

He added: “With the planned expansion, Globacom’s network capacity will increase in many folds, thus enabling it to carry high level of data in addition to other improvements in voice services.”
