Zimbabwe’s telecoms operators have contributed $41,3 million since January 2009 towards a fund geared at rolling out mobile services to even the most remote areas in the country.
This is according to the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz), which has said that Universal Services Fund had gained momentum since the ‘dollarisation’ of the economy..
And the announcement of the figure also comes days after telcos in the country, such as Econet Wireless, called for the scrapping of
"The break down of the money is Econet Wireless US$31,4 million, Telecel $5,7 million, NetOne US$1,8 million and TelOne $2,3 million," said Potraz director general, Charles Sibanda.
All licensed operators in the postal and telecommunications sector in Zimbabwe have to contribute to 2% of their revenues to the USF, which is administered by Potraz.
