Zimbabwe has made a significant step towards digitising its national libraries and information service system, with the establishment of an official body to oversee the project.
Torerayi Moyo, minister of primary and secondary education, has inaugurated the National Libraries and Documentation Service Council, which will drive digital transformation and technological innovation to ensure the library system evolves into a modern hub of knowledge, research, and inclusive access.
The council was inaugurated this week. Agnes Chikonzo, librarian at the University of Zimbabwe, was appointed as head of the council.
The minister stated that digitising such services was critical to achieving Vision 2030, a plan to create a prosperous, upper-middle-income Zimbabwe.
Moyo believes the council would boost professionalism, provide fair access to information, and foster collaborations that position Zimbabwe's libraries as engines of innovation, learning, and national productivity.
“I look forward to working closely with the council to ensure that the light of knowledge reaches every classroom, every community and every citizen of our motherland,” Moyo added.
