Police in Zimbabwe have arrested 879 people for talking on their cellphone while driving during the just ended Christmas and New Year holidays.

Zimbabwe police spokesperson, Andrew Phiri, said the national death toll on the country’s roads increased to 180 from 147 road deaths recorded during last year’s holidays.

While some of the accidents recorded throughout the country have mainly been blamed on the bad state of the country’s roads, faulty vehicles and human error, some of the accidents have been attributed to cellphone usage while driving.

“We have accidents caused by drivers concentrating on their mobile phones while on the road. Such accidents are on the rise and the police are not letting them go easy,” he said.
