Zambian rural communities are experiencing a new dawn as the smart village project, which was launched through the collaboration of Huawei Technologies and the government of Zambia, comes to fruition.
The parties signed an agreement to construct 100 smart villages in the country Zambia last year at the launch of the country’s first Smart Village: Muchila, in Namwala District, Southern Province.
Collins Nzovu, a member of parliament, announced yesterday that Malende, in central Zambia, has also been upgraded to a smart village.
He explained: “Malende is experiencing a new dawn, courtesy of a ground-breaking smart village project brought to fruition through the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education.
“This initiative signifies a monumental shift for our rural community, marking our departure from years of neglect to a promising horizon of opportunity. We are not making a promise; the project has already been completed.”
He went on to explain at the heart of this project is a modern solar plant, equipped with 96 solar panels providing 56 Kilowatts of power, and that this sustainable energy solution ensures that essential community facilities have access to reliable electricity.
Nzovu added: “Paired with this is a much-anticipated network tower, strategically erected to dismantle the longstanding barriers to connectivity that Malende has endured since Independence.
“This tower ushers us into an era of enhanced communication and digital access, positioning Malende at the cusp of a connectivity revolution.”
Malende also received two new smart classrooms equipped with smart screens and internet-connected laptops, according to Nzovu, who said that these classrooms enable Malende students to transcend geographical barriers.
“Our children can now engage in enriching exchange programs with international schools, including those in Lusaka, broadening their perspectives and preparing them for a globally competitive landscape,” Nzovu said.
“Digital textbooks and curriculum-loaded computers enrich their learning journey, nurturing young minds with limitless potential.”
