ZedMobile, the latest entrant in Zambia's mobile sector, has registered more than one million subscribers, a year after it started operations.

Started in mid-August 2024 as the country's fourth operator, the company said at the time that it planned to invest US$400 million and create 450 direct jobs.

During the past year, ZedMobile has created over 200 jobs, and its direct sales agents have grown from 1 000 to 6 500.

The privately-owned firm marked the achievements this past weekend at an event that included company executives, government officials, industry regulators, partners and selected subscribers.

Surie Ramasary, ZedMobile’s chief operations officer, attributed the growth to its aggressive ‘Join the movement’ marketing strategy, competitive offerings and a focus on customer experience.

“Entering a market, with two dominant players, as a fourth entrant, is not easy,” Ramasary said.

India's Airtel and South African-headquartered MTN are the dominant players, followed by the state-owned Zamtel.

Ramasary said the company was deepening penetration in under-served areas and securing mobile virtual network operator (MVNOs) partnerships, which currently include the United Church of Zambia, as well as a distribution partnership with Zambia Postal Services.

Felix Mutati, minister of Technology and Science, who was a guest of honour at the celebrations, said the growth of ZedMobile contributed immensely to Zambia's ICT and digital technologies sector, which grew by 17.4% and contributed 1.8% to the national GDP during the period.

“ZedMobile’s achievements prove that it has a strong future,” Mutati said.
