The United Bank for Africa Zambia (UBA) has added money mobile functionality to point-of-sale (POS) machines in an effort to increase digital payment options and minimise cash reliance.

UBA said this is an upgraded service that allows customers to make and receive seamless mobile money payments (Airtel, MTN, and Zamtel) directly on its POS machines.

This milestone, according to the bank, reflects its commitment to driving financial inclusion, convenience, and empowerment for both businesses and individuals.

It said: “We are more than a bank — we are a partner for progress. We believe in the power of collaboration to create solutions that truly serve all. We don’t celebrate this success as ours alone, but as that of our partners, regulators, and stakeholders whose collective efforts have turned this vision into reality.”

This development coincides with the Ministry of Technology and Science's revelation that the country’s mobile money sector registered transactions exceeding $20 billion (K486 billion) in 2024, during the launch of the Zambia 2025-2027 Digital Strategic Plan by the Information and Communications Technology Association of Zambia late last week, highlighting the sector's significant contribution to economic activities.

According to the ministry, the launch took place last Friday and marks a big step towards financial inclusion.

By integrating mobile money with POS machines, UBA is introducing a solution that allows seamless transactions for both cardholders and mobile wallet users, the ministry said.

It went on to say the initiative reflects a focus on home grown solutions, public-private partnerships, and technology-driven resilience.

Also, it added that the solution bridges the gap between the formal financial system and the informal sector, enabling small and medium enterprises to access credit, grants, and growth opportunities.

Commenting on the solution, the ministry said: “This solution extends formal financial services to millions of Zambians who may not have bank accounts, but actively use mobile money. By bridging mobile money and banking, UBA is making true financial inclusion a reality. This launch also reflects UBA’s commitment to digital infrastructure investment and aligns with Zambia’s national agenda of building a resilient digital economy.”
