Zambia officially launched its Online Passport Application System, marking a significant step forward in the country's digital transformation.

The SMART Zambia Institute, the country's e-Government Division, announced the development, stating that with over 1000 passports now processed online, Zambia is making progress towards smarter, more efficient public service sector in which technology serves the citizen and accountability is built into every stage.

It added: “The Online Passport Application and Payment System is transforming how citizens access government services by making the process more transparent, convenient and accessible.

“Through this digital platform, government is reducing processing delays, strengthening data protection and empowering citizens to track their passport applications with clarity and confidence.”

This latest moves comes as the Ministry of Technology and Science previously urged Zambia’s tech agencies to shift towards paperless operations.

At the time, SMART Zambia national Coordinator, Percy Chinyama, asserted that smart office solutions will enable the government to minimise operational costs, including over ZMW400 million (roughly US$15 million) in stationery costs, while enhancing service delivery.
