Zambia is turning to artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies to help meet its target of doubling international tourist arrivals to 5 million a year, according to the Ministry of Tourism.
The country began implementing the plan by holding its first Tourism and Technology Symposium in Lusaka on Thursday, themed "Artificial Intelligence, digital Transformation and Smart Tourism", which also emphasised the responsible and ethical use of AI.
The symposium came as AI, automation , data analytics, digital platforms and improved connectivity reshape the tourism sector — changing how destinations are promoted, how visitors discover and book experiences, and how tourism authorities manage attractions, monitor demand and make investment decisions.
Participants said hitting the 5 million target would require more than expanding accommodation and tourism products; it would also depend on seamless digital discovery, booking and payment, reliable connectivity, evidence-based destination management, and stronger links between local enterprises and global markets.
Evans Muhanga, permanent secretary in Zambia's Ministry of Tourism, welcomed the collaboration between players in the sector, noting that the event brought together tourism authorities, technology policymakers, ICT regulators, research and education networks, financial institutions, innovators and private-sector leaders.
He said” "The event provided an important platform to examine how digital technologies and AI are transforming tourism.”
Muhanga said the symposium aligned with Zambia's Eighth National Development Plan, part of which aims to grow the tourism sector.
"Technology is no longer a luxury but a central pillar of national development. digitalisation is important for improving access to services and making government platforms more efficient," he added.
Discussions at the symposium also covered digital inclusion, youth-led innovation, data-driven management, and investment in infrastructure needed to translate technological progress into visitor growth, stronger conservation, job creation and wider economic value.
