The Zambian government and the Payments Association of Zambia (PAYZ) are working together to expedite digital financial services, with an emphasis on boosting financial inclusion through policy and infrastructural enhancements as well as encouraging digital payments within government agencies.
This collaboration intends to change customer behaviour towards digital means while reducing cash dependency.
Policies and collaboration are key emphasis areas and activities, with regular, quarterly discussions with the Ministry to harmonise regulation and transform national payment systems.
President Hakainde Hichilema hosted PAYZ at State House on Thursday, together with officials from the Ministry of Technology and Science, the Bank of Zambia, and the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Regulatory Authority.
He commented: Today at State House, we received the courtesy call from the Payments Association of Zambia, representing a mobile money sector that is an important partner in our government’s digital financial services agenda.
“PAYZ has extended financial services to unbanked rural communities and created micro-entrepreneurship opportunities for thousands of our young people through agency networks. These efforts are commendable.”
During the engagements, ZedMobile, the country’s newest and fourth mobile network operator, assured the government of a commitment to supporting the National Financial Inclusion Strategy driving responsible digital innovation.
