Revenues from Zambia's mobile network operators (MNOs) increased to K13.15 billion ($698 million) in 2025 from K11.54 billion ($613 million) the previous year. That’s according to the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA).
This growth represents an increase of 13.9% during the period, highlighting the continued solid trajectory of the sector.
Also encouraged by solid growth in the number of mobile subscriptions over the past year, ZICTA projects subscriptions to reach 27.8 million by the end of 2026, representing a penetration rate of approximately 131%.
According to the regulator, mobile cellular subscriptions grew from 23.2 million in 2024 to 26.2 million in 2025.
Mobile network bandwidth capacity increased from 1.18 exabytes to 1.23 exabytes during the period, records ZICTA.
Internet subscriptions also increased by 10%, from 13.3 million to 14.7 million, reflecting growing demand for broadband services across the country.
ZICTA provided the figures and forecast in its latest ICT and Postal Sector Performance Market report, late last week.
“This growth was supported by continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure, increased use of digital platforms in economic and social activities, and noted improvements in the affordability of ICT services resulting from promotional offers and more tailored packages,” said Hanford Chaaba, Corporate Communications Manager, ZICTA.
The regulator has predicted the business environment will continue improving after positive developments in macroeconomic fundamentals, which include lower inflation and strengthening of the local currency.
“In addition, improvements in electricity supply and increased investments in alternative energy solutions for telecommunications infrastructure are expected to reduce operational costs for service providers and ultimately improve the quality of experience,” Chaaba said.
