The Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre (KGRTC) has inked an agreement with China's Vision High Tech to develop the second phase of the Namalundu Solar Project, which is a key step towards growing Zambia's renewable energy capacity.

According to the KGRTC, the next stage will add 10 megawatts to the 10 megawatts generated during phase one, bringing the project's total production to 20 megawatts.

This comes as the government aspires to attain universal access to electricity and reach at least 40% of the population with clean energy solutions by 2030, significantly accelerating the pace of grid and off-grid access, as well as deployment of clean cooking technologies.

Speaking at the signing ceremony held in Lusaka yesterday, KGRTC head of projects and consultancy Mwaba Matimba said the facility aligns with the centre’s commitment to diversifying the national energy mix and promoting sustainable energy solutions.

Vision High Tech general manager Lin Yifeng reaffirmed the company’s dedication to the partnership, noting that the project will integrate Chinese technology and efficiency to ensure optimal performance.

Meanwhile, KGRTC board chairperson Patricia Musiya said the Namalundu Solar Project is aimed at broadening power supply sources while fostering local and international partnerships in energy development.

“KGRTC director Davies Chinkusu disclosed that ground clearing for phase two has already commenced, noting that full construction will begin once all regulatory requirements are finalised,” said the institution in a statement.
