In a move to boost and diversify energy security, Zambia’s national electricity utility, ZESCO has launched two solar projects across the country.
This comes soon after the company broke ground for the Kafue Gorge Lower 100MW solar plant late last week.
According to the company, it is investing a combined $130 million on the pivotal infrastructure initiatives; $30 million on Choma 35MW solar plant and $100 million on Kafue West-Muzuma 330kV transmission line.
The infrastructure aims to address the Southern African nation's persistent energy deficit and reduce reliance on hydro-power.
The solar facility generates sustainable energy, while the 180-kilometre transmission line acts as crucial infrastructure for transferring electricity from new generation facilities.
Justin Loongo managing director at ZESCO underlined that the solar plant will enable clean, reliable electricity, powered by the sun in a period of eight months.
It will be developed in partnership with China Energy Engineering Group Hunan Electric Power Design Institute and it is expected to create 300 jobs, and commercial opportunities for locals.
“These developments are not only a sign of progress, but they are also a signal that Choma is open for investment, for innovation, and for inclusive development. They bring promise of jobs, improved infrastructure, and of a more connected future for our people,” commented Choma mayor, Javan Simoloka.
